Reference image editing: change one thing, keep the rest

Most failed AI edits fail because the prompt mixes what should change with what should stay. This workbench is built around separating the two.

Start an edit

In short

  • Use text-to-image for new compositions and an editing route for a reference.
  • Write one change, then a keep list.
  • Preservation is an instruction, not a guarantee — always inspect.
  • Keep the original next to the edit.

Write change and keep separately

  1. Change: one specific edit — surface, background or a single detail.
  2. Keep: geometry, camera angle, light direction and anything else that must not move.

Inspect before you keep it

  • Edges: does the object outline still match?
  • Shadows: do they follow the original light?
  • Proportions: has anything grown, shrunk or shifted?
  • Lettering and small details: zoom in.

Upload limits and cost

Upload limits, controls and the credit quote depend on the model you select; check them in the selector before submitting.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my edit change more than I asked?

Ask for a smaller change and repeat the keep list explicitly. Editing models can still alter details, so inspect the result.

Where are my results?

Download from the workspace or return to them in your account history.

Updated 2026-10-04. Independent image workspace. Nano Banana 2.5 is coming soon; current generation uses the model you select.
